ABOUT US
DuPage AME Church is more than just a place of worship — it’s a spiritual home rooted in faith, love, and service. For over four decades, we have nurtured a Christ-centered community where everyone is welcome to grow in faith, find support, and make a difference. Our journey is one of resilience, vision, and unwavering commitment to the call of God.
OUR MISSION
The mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ’s liberating gospel through word and deed.
OUR PURPOSE
At DuPage AME Church, our purpose is to care for both our congregation and our greater community through Christian fellowship, compassionate outreach, and faithful service. We are committed to preserving and strengthening our surrounding suburban community for generations to come.
OUR VISION
We live out our purpose through a guiding principle we call N.E.W.:
-
Nurture the body
-
Elevate the spirit
-
Witness the love of Christ
Together, these values shape how we worship, serve, and grow—both within our church and beyond its walls.

OUR JOURNEY
THROUGH FAITH
Founded in 1979, DuPage AME Church began with a vision to establish an African Methodist Episcopal presence in DuPage County. From humble beginnings with services held at a Holiday Inn in Glen Ellyn, our congregation has grown into a thriving faith community.
MILESTONES IN
OUR HISTORY
-
September 1979: Bishop Hubert N. Robinson appointed Reverend Donald Harwell to organize our church following a plea by Sydney Finley, Mary Lou Finley, and Ernie Gibson at the AME Church's Chicago Conference.
-
1979-1981: Our congregation worshipped at various locations, including the Holiday Inn in Glen Ellyn, the Park Boulevard Farmhouse at College of DuPage, and Park Boulevard Bible Church.
-
1981-1989: The congregation relocated to 412 Crescent Street in Wheaton and grew to a couple hundred members.
-
October 1989: Bishop J. Haskell Mayo appointed Reverend James F. Miller as pastor with the directive to "Go build a church!"
-
August 1996: The congregation held its first service at our current home, 4300 Yackley Avenue in Lisle, and membership grew rapidly.
-
2009-2011: Major building expansion was completed and dedicated to Christian Service.
-
October 2021: We welcomed Rev. Conitras Houston Dickens, affectionately known as "Pastor C," as our first female pastor. Bishop John F. White appointed her to lead our congregation into an exciting new chapter of ministry and growth.

PASTOR C's LEADERSHIP
Today, DuPage AME Church stands as a beacon of faith in our community. Under Pastor C's visionary leadership, our congregation has experienced remarkable growth both spiritually and numerically, bringing her “southern hospitality to the Midwest”. Her innovative approach to ministry has revitalized our church programs, strengthened our community outreach initiatives, and welcomed many new families into our church family. Through her passionate teaching and compassionate pastoral care, Pastor C continues to inspire our congregation to deepen our faith journey while expanding our impact throughout DuPage County and beyond.
