THE GOLF FOR CHRIST LEAGUE
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
The Golf for Christ league of DuPage AME Church was founded in 1988 for the purpose of providing
an opportunity to promote fellowship in Christ among Christians and friends of DuPage AME Church
through the sport of Golf. "What a fellowship, what a joy divine!"
The league was open to men, women, and children and met Saturday afternoons during the spring
and summer months for fellowship in a round of golf.
The Golf for Christ league of DuPage AME Church enacted a program in 1999 to assist members of
our Boy Scout Troup to get their golf merit badges. In 2004 the program was expanded to introduce
the game of golf to aspiring youths of our church and surrounding communities. We formed a
partnership with the United States Golf Association who provided a matching grant award to
help fund the program. We were successful in matching the award with our first annual fundraiser
Golf Tournament in July of 2004.
Throughout the summer and winter months of 2004/2005 we provided golf clinics each Saturday at
Ditka's Sports Dome in Bolingbrook. This provided continual practice and development of skills
during the off-season.
In December of 2004, the group organized an executive committee and advisory board; and
conducted its first board meeting on December 4, 2004.
The board elected to expand our youth golf development program to reach a greater number of
our youths as we added additional partners that will include the Hook-A-Kid On Golf Foundation
of Illinois and the Cantigny Foundation; along with the United States Golf Association.
MISSION STATEMENT
"To serve as a financial, mentor and coaching resource for aspiring young golfers, who
because of social status, family status or lack of financial resources are unable to obtain
equipment, training or fees required to successfully participate in the game of golf."
Life skills development coupled with golf skills development to build strong character
traits is an integral part of the youth mentoring aspect of our program.
